Olympic Park is in the midst of a transformation that will see it become an AFL ground used primarily for training by Collingwood. Few would know the field has seen Australian rules action once before, way back in October 1989.
It’s not clear what the organisers behind ‘Footballmania’ were thinking. From what can be ascertained, the two teams each consisted of 15 current and recently retired VFL players. The likes of Mark ’Jacko’ Jackson, David Cloke and Robbie Muir donned rather lengthy shorts and ’Sweathog’ style tops popularised during the Mulletaceous period of the late ‘80’s/early ‘90’s.
The famous 1989 VFL Grand Final between Hawthorn and Geelong was always going to be a hard act to follow. It’s fair to say the football public failed to warm to the post season promotion. Just over 2000 reportedly braved the cool, windy conditions.
If there’s anyone out there willing to own up to some involvement in this crazy footballmania shindig, please come forward and share your suppressed memories!
